What constitutes a healthy diet for children? For starters, review the Food Guide Pyramid for young children developed by the United States Department of Agriculture. This pyramid gives parents a great idea of what and how much children aged 2 to 6 years should eat. If you use the pyramid as a guide for your child's dietary needs, your child will receive all the foods he or she needs in a day.


Developing a healthy diet, however, involves more than just knowing what foods to eat and how much to eat. It involves putting together a long-term plan that will ensure that your child continues to maintain healthy eating habits.


Make a Plan, Not a Diet

Unless your healthcare provider prescribes one, do not place your child on a diet. Even a child who is overweight is still growing and still needs to be provided with the calories needed to reach his or her potential size.

Encourage your child to grow into his or her weight so that height and weight are proportional. The best way to accomplish this is to make a plan that:

Involves the whole family Provides regular meals and snacks. Avoids using food as a reward. Allows your child to make healthy food choices.

With a plan like this, children can learn some healthy eating habits that will help them for the rest of their lives.

Too often, a child is the only one in the family who is expected to change dietary habits. Although the goal of improving your child's dietary habits is a good one, an unintended result could be that your child will feel isolated and resentful toward the rest of the family. In such a situation, a child's relapse into poor dietary habits is much more likely.

To prevent such a relapse, get the entire family involved. If everyone in the family maintains a healthy diet, the child will be less likely to feel isolated and more likely to feel part of the family. At the same time, the child's parents will be serving as good role models for their children. Of course, the best by-product of having everyone involved in good nutrition is that everyone will be healthier. Remember, we never outgrow the need to follow a healthy lifestyle!


Establish regular mealtimes and snacks

If children have irregular eating patterns and eating times, they will not learn to gauge how much to eat at one time. Consequently, they may develop poor eating habits or tend to overeat because they may not know when their next meal will come.

Avoid these problems by establishing regular meal times and snacks, with reasonable serving sizes at all meals.

Avoid using food as a reward

Using some foods as a reward for eating other foods gives children the impression that some food, such as ice cream, is good, while other food, such as broccoli, is bad. As a result, children may not want to eat certain types of food, such as fruits and vegetables, even though these foods are necessary for a healthy lifestyle. When children get older, they will be less likely to eat the foods they were once bribed to eat.

Prevent this by making all food seem good. Although the child may not take to a certain food immediately, he or she may eventually acquire a taste for the food, but not if the food is portrayed as something bad.

It is unrealistic to think that your child will not have food preferences. Children want to have some input and will most likely eat the foods they have chosen.

Give your child such choices, but give your child healthy choices! Thus, instead of having your child choose between cookies or a piece of fruit, have your child choose between a piece of fruit and some pretzels or choose between two different types of fruit.
